Sally Fields as Frog in Smokey & The Bandit said it best, even Bambi has enemies. Thing is when I get notices from either Facebook or the people behind a page saying I’m blocked from a page or group that’s one thing, when it comes to towing and the disabled vehicle rescue and recovery industry, I get mad, or at least very perturbed.
Since the year of 1975 I have ate, breathed, lived and fought for all in the tow business. Some like me like Tommy N Thompson of TNT Towing of Boise, Travis Jones of Denny’s Wrecker Service of Pocatello Idaho, Perry Bullock of Bullocks Towing of Salt Lake City. Then there are those that despise me, most of Idaho Wrecker Supply of Mountain Home, Idaho, and even a few others here in Utah. But that does not mean I stopped fighting for the good and benefit of all who do this profession.
I am the only one, out of my pocket by the way, that constructed and put on the over the air radio , radio station dedicated to us in towing, I’m the only one who has paid for out of my own pocket TV ads for being safe around accident scenes, I was the only one that supported extensive training and certification of tow owner/operators , long before Donnie Cruise and WreckMasters.
I was the first promoting the idea of moving over for towing operators, producing TV ads or Public Service Ads or PSA’s, long before there was a Facebook page pumping up the idea.
When I first fell in love with my tow truck LexiBelle, I had little knowledge of how to use it. I learned through trial by fire. But I learned from the very best our area in this area. Steve Cossley of Steve’s Towing Ogden Utah, Tommy Thompson of TNT Towing of Boise, but mostly a groovy guy named John W Nausbaum, of Johnny's Towing of Twin Falls Idaho, that could rig and recover things that few dared. Oh and yes in 1974 I was the one that rescued Evil Knevil’s Rocket Bike from the Snake River Canyon just outside of Twin Falls, yes it was LexiBelle, and me.
I love towing, I work day in and day out both running my own company that came in part from the Dukes-of-Hazzard and as a tribute to a former boss Charlie Legg of A1 Towing in Twin Falls, Idaho. Together its Cooter’s A1 Toewing.
When TV stations thought the only advertising for a tow company was for the Yellow Pages and we as a industry were not justified to be on a TV ad, it was ME that ran ads, for my company as well as the industry.
Long before there was a Idaho Towing & Recovery Professionals Association in Idaho, there was our 20 in the Magic Valley of Idaho called the Road Knytes, that was the only towing organization in Idaho.
In 1979 through a series of events and no one else stepping up our group, put together some support and we ran a thing called Highway Hooker Radio, taken from my company’ original handle, Highway Hooker Towing. That radio show is still ran on the weekends on www.livestream.com/hazzardayre , as Highway Hooker Radio.
When the idea of a classic tow truck video/pictorial publication came up it was me that took time way from business then in Rigby Idaho, to fashion a thing we did as Klassik Hookers and Haulers. Featuring the best and most custom tow trucks and some hot honeys to enhance them. Of course about midway through that project , I moved back to Hazzard(Hagerman) Idaho.
But here’s the deal, back then beyond just running a simple ad, in a publication called Monkey Bizzness, but I wrote a column called devoted to us in towing. The publication sold out, I moved back to Utah in 2001, but I have never stopped fighting and loving this business and profession of going towing. And yet still, I never get any real kudos or thanks. What I do get is people knocking the look of my trucks, I have yet to hear from anybody, say something like hey, “ I know your having a tough time of it since you Mom And Dad Died, how about us helping you fix up your old trucks” Nope but my they can find fault. I have also never heard from any big company here in Utah say, “ Hey I know Charlie helped you in Idaho, how about you come work for us?” But my they can criticize. Yet few have the experience or the pride of this profession that I have. I’m not just in it for the bottom line of cash in my company’ stash, but I’d like to help improve the industry and profession for all who are in it. But do I ever see on a Facebook page be it, on Hanging with Hookers, remember I came up with that term FIRST, nor on Proud to be in the Towing Profession, anybody say hey we’ll help, do I ever see in my snail mail box, a check for a couple hundred bucks to help our efforts in running TV ads for move it over campaign, do I ever see anything from anybody else except the RodeKnytes? No.
At the end of the day know this; I have 35 years in this profession. I have seen it all, towed it all, and some things none of the fancy rigs would ever have tried. Like a truck twice the size of LexiBelle up a 80 degree hill loaded with grain. Nor a 4 ton tater truck down off of Bell Rapids in Idaho loaded down with 80 sacks of taters. Again at the end of the day, know this, I am the original, let me repeat , I AM THE ORIGINAL HIGHWAY HOOKER, have been always will be. Oh and as for Klassik Hookers and Haulers? That’s going back into production with a hot gal from Pocatello.
