Back in 2009 when both AyreWolf Radio and its cousin Hazzard County Radio signed off from Gooding Idaho, the brotherhood of the Knytes-of-Anarchy and the AyreWolvez gathered in Bliss Idaho. We knew then that a total makeover was in fact needed to enable what we were doing mainly to preserve both Hazzard County/DOH heritage and loyalty as well as educating some very ignorant and arrogant Yankees of our southern heritage and history, but a catchy name was just beyond our reach.
But lets go back for a few centons to 1973. A small, but effective and loyal band of brothers into two wheels on a small framework, and those into rides that were home built, gathered at the then Holiday Inn in Ogden Utah.
After about the 8th soda and the 7th chocolate sundae, what would become the Street Commanders Club was founded.
After a long captive stay in 1975/76 it was determined I was to reside in Lewiston Idaho. After the snitching I did to local authorities of drug and other abuse by staff of that facility, known then as NICH, I came home. However something good did come out of that.
It was an early 3rd period, that I had enrolled in that High School’s band but could not read music. Oh I could play drums by ear and feel, just could not read sheet music. So the band teacher said get out of here and I went to a 3rd hour study hall.
It just so happened that in the back of that classroom was a albeit tiny, but a radio station. Used primarily for school functions like games and such. So I got involved. Since from a few years of prior radio experience as well as having the only FCC license of the students involved in that radio station class, I got my own show during that 3rd hour. So I found that it was time to yap about the newly formed out of the Street Commanders the TeenAge Trucker Association.
When I got home to Hazzard after 4 months at NICH, I waded through piles of both fan and wanting to join mail, for the TeenAge Trucker Association. The interest I found was generated through the 3rd hour radio gig I did in Lewiston Idaho at KLHS FM.
So I got together with the powers that be and said lets crank up our own station. Problem was until a hole opened to file a CP app, we had to run pirate. But run we did. We picked KDSL short for Kay-Diesel. Sadly it was determined years after we were running on someone else’s call sign. Okay then. Thing was we were doing better in ratings than any legal or otherwise station in the small rural Magic Valley Idaho market. We were keeping the over the road long haul truckers informed and entertained, plus teaching basic broadcast skills, to someday wanna be trucke radio personalities.
Of course I began tuning into those greats of the genere , Bill Mack, Gene Simmons(Truckin Bozo) Dave Nemo, and the like, but the one I had a keen interest in was a bunch coming out of KOB 77 out of Alberquacky New Mexico. They were running a show called JOC radio, that so happened to be produced out of Bountiful Utah. So I made a note of where the location was, and hoofed it down here. Got together with the owner and formed a partnership of sorts.
In 1980, after the discovery of a 1970 Dodge Charger, in Paul Idaho, I made a deal with the kid who owned it that if he was to ever sell it , I wanted it. In April of 1981 the kid was going to go on an LDS mission, but had lost my phone number. In search for some white go-go boots to use in another display for another ride we had built as the General Jackson, I found what would be the terror of western Idaho/Northern Utah as OUR General Lee.
Back then, the Utah AutoRama was called the SLC AutoRama, and was held the week before Thanksgiving in the Salt Palace. Mickey Ellis produced the event and it was cars, hot-rods,trucks, and customs, not as much commercial displays. And of course we were there.
That year Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke was hitting all the car shows as a feature and promo of the Dukes. I of course found the long line for the event got a autograph, but met one of the producers of the show, mainly Skip Ward. He liked what we had done with our General, and even he said ours was more authentic. This started a long and treasured relationship.
Of course I considered things, knew I sure as heck did not resemble Bo or Luke, but I had an uncanny semblance to good old Cooter(Ben-Jones). Both in personal looks but in vocation. ON TV Cooter fixed cars and ran a tow truck in a remote rural town, so did, I. So I said, sure we have the General, but how about a wyld, tow truck worthy of the most gifted mechanic in Hazzard? So enter in LexiBelle>so construction began, but still needs finished. That said, it was in 1982 the Street Commanders Club, the JR 14 CB club, and the TeenAge Truckers Association, came together as one group, as the Hazzard County Knytes. Hazzard from the Dukes of course, and Knytes(KNIGHTS) from a then hit movie about some other more urban rebels called>however getting any local media coverage was like putting socks on a rooster. So again the brotherhood met and fired up that long power outlaw radio station. Only we named it KHOGG, which made sense. A all Hazzard County Radio station of fight the system, tell it like it is, radio station. Sadly due to the problems of being outlaw the FCC Revenuers showed up. Mostly squealed on, by another area radio station that was jealous and envious of our sales and listener numbers. In 1983, after my Mom died, and I wasn’t up for much of anything, so I re-uped to The Marines, and went away from Hazzard, but Hazzard had not left me. Mid 1984 the UCSMC sent me home on reserve duty, and we put together legally, under call letters KTOW, Hazzard’s radio station.
That’s the early part of this. Over the years I had left Hazzard and surrounding Magic Valley/Twin Falls Idaho. But in 2008 through a con from an idiot putting out online that he had jobs to fill at a not yet built much less approved NUKE power plant, I relocated to Glenn’s Ferry Idaho. Of course once I found that the power plant was bull stuff, I tried to back out of the lease of the place in Glenn’s Ferry. What I found though was the amount of died in the wool Knytes was only 3. Not the 250 that we had just a few years earlier. So again the club met at my place in Glenn’s Ferry. It decided to storm, the only TV was FX, and of course the show Sons of Anarchy was on. With the agreement of a needed rebuild of the club going back to our trucking roots we swiped the Anarchy thing, combined it with the Knytes, to retain our Hazzard roots, and in the winter 2008/spring of 2009, the Knytes-of-Anarchy was reformed, with only one subsidiary the AyreWolvez. The radio op, was put in a office of a ornery real estate crook, and by late 2009, we folded that and I moved to Buhl Idaho. No gear, no nothing, but we set out to rebuild. So using a mini control board I bought from Radio Shack, and music from online, all three of our radio shows came back, to syndicated at least radio. However that need to bleed on airwaves fed a even deeper hunger. So I was part wasted on some pain killers from an injured hip, and was lying in my bed one night and it hit. Combine Hazzard County Radio, with AyreWolf Radio, tuck both Dixie Diesel and Highway Hooker radio under that umbrella. So what sounded good? HazzardAyre was born. But not yet perfected. We needed an outlet, that could combine, our newsletter blogs for the club, and our radio station HazzardAyre. In early 2011 I moved from Buhl to Rupert, but after I found that the first place I ever lived in , when I first came to Idaho again, (the story of that in another entry) and a better control console, newer gear. But still needed the website.
That brings us to where we are today. With some direction from a long gone(thank God) former engineer, we now have the streaming part of the station rolling out at on Friday’s through Tuesdays of each week. But the site is still needing construction. So we are working with a local design firm here in Ogden, Utah. Likewise for the visuals we are working with Vickie at TMG in Salt Lake City/Murray Utah, for the eye candy. Unfortunately the photographer we thought we had and us mainly me had creative differences and delays and he has since departed. Guess I and/or one of the Knytes needs to learn to being a photographer/videographer.
And that’s the story of HazzardAyre.
So when you get the inkling , log onto: www.livestream.com/hazzardayre from 9:00PM to 4:00AM Fridays through Tuesdays. I take Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays off to run Cooter’s A1 ToeWing .
